The Villa

Villa Uliveto

Nardo, Puglia

The Accomodation

Villa Uliveto is set in 2.5 hectares (approximately 7 acres) private land. There are almost 300 olive trees, citrus fuit trees, walnut tree, fig trees and prickly pears. It is in the typical Pugliese style of farmhouse, which is not particularly inspiring architecturally, but it does have almost 5 metre high ceilings, so remains cool.

INSIDE - There are two master bedrooms each with its own en suite shower room and a further two twin bedded rooms which sandwich a large communal shower room. A further studio double bedded room with its own shower room & kitchen benefits from its own entrance. The comfortable lounge / dining room has a flat screen TV with DVD player and there is a further morning room leading directly on to the fully equipped kitchen

OUTSIDE - Leading from the lounge (through double glass doors) is the 12m pool with crystal clear water. Sunloungers, chairs and tables are provided on the tiled terrace. The perfect place to spend the day with the backdrop of the olive grove, or sit and relax in the evening after a day at the beach or a day exploring the region.

Important Notes:

As already mentioned, Villa Uliveto is in a secluded, semi-rural setting and whilst we have made every effort to modernise our holiday home to a high standard, there are some things that are not to a totally modern standard.

Water is supplied from our own well and is therefore plentiful and without restriction. However, this means that we do not recommend drinking the tap water. Also because it is drawn by electric pump , this can very occasionally go wrong.

Power is supplied by overhead lines and is therefore also subject to very occasional disruption.

The access road from Nardo is quite rough in parts and we always recommend driving with caution.

Waste water and sewage is handled by a septic tank, so please take care what you you put down the drains.

Location

Our lovely villa is set in rural location only 2kms west of the centre of Nardo in Puglia, southern Italy (the heel of Italy). This is a small & pretty town with a delightful historic centre dating back over 1000 years.

The villa is also only 5kms from the coast and a selection of sandy or rocky beaches.

Nardo is only a 20 minute drive from the magnificent city of Lecce. The heart of Lecce is in the Baroque style and the town is often referred to as “The Florence of the South”. It is a sophisticated and lively city with a huge selection of restaurants, bars, shops and boutiques set within a wonderful architectural backdrop.

Nardo is only a 50 minute drive from Brindisi and its airport.

Area Notes & Places to Visit

Although our villa is only a short way from town, it is in a truly rural setting and will feel isolated so a car is essential.

This part of Italy has not had the major tourist influx associated with the North and is still very much ‘untouched’ in international tourism terms. Parts of the area are sophisticated and modern and others seem like they have barely changed for hundreds of years.

Eating out can range from very inexpensive to moderately expensive by comparison to the UK and particularly London. In Italy a Bar is also a Café and many can offer good, simple and inexpensive food. It is certainly possible to have Pizza, Salad, Wine & Coffee for around 6-7 Euros per person.

Whilst visiting Puglia, try to get into the local pace of life (it’s much less urgent) and understand that things don’t happen the way they do at home. Shops close at lunchtime and reopen around 4pm. In summer they may not reopen until 5pm or even 6pm and then they stay open until around 9pm. During the lunch hours many places can seem deserted. Dinner is often taken after 10pm and places can be lively until after midnight. So try to plan your days around this and relax by the pool in the early afternoon or stroll quietly through the streets of the towns.

Nardo is small and quite sleepy but there are many shops around the periphery of the walled historic centre. These will certainly provide everything required during your stay and much more besides. There are a few good restaurants and some simpler eateries as well as bars and cafés. The historic centre is undergoing some important restoration and the tiny streets are lovely to walk through with baroque monuments, baroque churches and out of town, masserie (typical ancient fortified farmhouses). The Piazza Salandra is the centre of the town. The notable Cathedral, built around 1000 AD has an 18th century façade, but the interior has maintained the original Romanesque-Gothic appearance.
